Keyword research reads live search-market data for your domain and market. If it came back with nothing, one of four things is true — three are fixable, and one is information.
Find your cause
The market doesn't match the site. Volumes and rankings are per country, so a Singapore business researched under the wrong market returns noise or nothing.
To fix: re-check the market on the wizard's market step and set it to where your customers actually search. The wizard suggests one from your site's signals, and your choice wins.
The domain barely ranks yet. Ranking-derived keywords need rankings to derive from, so a new site legitimately returns few. This is a stage, not an error.
To fix: confirm the proposed keywords — the ones drawn from your site's own content carry the strategy until rankings exist — and revisit ranking-derived data after a few months of content.
The address has a port or isn't a plain domain. Search data exists for example.com, not example.com:8080 or an IP.
To fix: audit the public, portless domain your customers use — the address that resolves for visitors.
The keywords genuinely have no measured volume. Ultra-niche terms return zero volume because few people search them monthly. Note that zero volume with real buyer intent can still be worth a page — the data measures popularity, not worth.
After you've corrected the market or the domain, rerun the research.
Limits and usage
- A rerun for the same domain and market returns cached results for up to 7 days rather than re-spending. Changing the market always fetches fresh data.
- Data reflects the provider's most recent monthly snapshot, so brand-new trends can lag in volume data while being real in the world.
If something isn't working
The market is right and research still returns nothing
To fix: check the domain spelling as your customers reach it — www or apex are both fine, but the wrong TLD is a different site. If the problem persists, the data provider may be having a moment. Retry before concluding anything.
Volumes look far too small for your market
Why this happens: per-market volume for a small country is genuinely small, so a city-state's numbers can read as tiny next to global figures. Share of a small market can still be an excellent business.
How long does a rerun serve cached results instead of fresh data?
Up to 7 days for the same domain and market. A cached hit returns instantly without re-spending, and the cache is keyed on domain plus market — so correcting the market always fetches fresh data.
