Check AI Overview & AI Mode presence

The audit probes Google's AI surfaces live for your top keywords. Learn what appeared, what cited you, and what a zero really means.

Open in the appUpdated 2026-08-22

When an audit runs with AI insights on, it probes Google's AI surfaces live for your top keywords: does an AI Overview appear for the query, does AI Mode answer it, and in either case, is your domain among the cited sources. The report's AI presence section shows the result per keyword, with the cited URLs when you're cited.

This is measured, not modeled — the probe reads the actual results page for your market at audit time.

It runs as part of audits started from the setup wizard, where AI insights are on by default. Read it whenever you read the report, and re-audit for a fresh probe after content changes aimed at AI visibility.

Check your AI presence

To see the results:

  1. Run an audit through the setup wizard →.
  2. Open the report's AI presence section.
  3. For continuous history rather than a point-in-time probe, use the AI Results Tracker →.

What each result means

  • Appeared: no. No AI surface exists for that query in your market right now. Common for transactional and local queries — a genuine zero, not a measurement failure.
  • Appeared: yes, cited: no. The AI answer exists and sources others. This is the gap the rest of the product helps you close.
  • Cited: yes. The listed URLs are the pages doing the work — protect and extend them.

Note that AI Mode citing you while AI Overview doesn't (or the reverse) is normal — they're different surfaces with different triggers.

Limits and usage

  • The probe adds a small live search-data cost per audit (cents, not dollars), which is why it rides along with wizard audits rather than running constantly.
  • It probes your audit's top keywords, not the whole tracked list — the tracker covers breadth over time.
  • Results are market-specific and can change week to week; treat any single probe as a snapshot.

If something isn't working

The section is empty. The audit ran without AI insights (bulk and API paths leave it off), or the keyword set had no queries with data. Rerun from the wizard.

You're cited in real life but the report says no. Check the market: the probe reads your project's configured country, and AI surfaces differ by location. If the markets match, rerun — AI surfaces genuinely change.
