Ghost keeps each post's and page's meta title and description in the post settings menu, under Meta data. Pages use the same editor and the same menu as posts. Here's where each change from your On-Page Mapping goes.
Change a post or page's title and meta description
To change a post or page:
- Open it in the editor.
- Open the post settings menu.
- Open
Meta data. - Paste the new meta title and description into their fields. Ghost shows a preview as you type.
- Update the post so the change goes live.
Leave a field blank and Ghost fills it from the post's own content. Search engines can still choose other text than yours.

Change the homepage title and description
Your homepage's meta data lives in Settings > General > Meta data. The publication title you show visitors is a separate field, in Settings > General > Title & description.

Change the H1
Ghost has no H1 setting. Your theme decides which element is the H1. Ghost's own example post template puts the post title inside an h1, so the post title is usually the one to change. To see which text your theme uses, run a post through the free Meta tag checker.

Change the URL
Ghost builds a post's URL from its title. To change it, edit Post URL in the post settings menu. Ghost suggests a short slug, with hyphens between words.
Ghost's help doesn't say whether the old URL redirects after a change. Open the old address after you save. If it shows a 404, add a redirect:
- Go to
Settings>Advanced>Labs, open the Labs area, and select theBeta featurestab. - Download your existing
redirects.yamlfile. - Add a line under
301:, indented with spaces, such as/old-post-url: /new-post-url. - Upload the edited file in the same place.

Add image alt text
Click the image card in the editor, then the alt button on the right of the caption line. Type the alt text, then click the button again to go back to the caption.

Hide a page from search
Ghost's help centre doesn't document a noindex setting for posts or pages. Check your theme's documentation, or ask Ghost support before you add one by hand.
Check it worked
Run the published post through the free Meta tag checker. It shows the title, description, H1 and robots tag the page serves now. When the change is live, tick Mark done on the page's row in On-Page Mapping.
Limits and usage
- Ghost recommends keeping meta titles and descriptions within its suggested length but doesn't publish a number. Use the preview as you type.
- A custom canonical URL takes the post out of your sitemap.
