Change SEO titles and descriptions in Webflow

Where Webflow keeps a page's title tag, meta description, H1, slug, image alt text and indexing switch, for static and Collection pages.

Open in the appUpdated 2026-10-19

Webflow keeps each page's title tag and meta description in that page's own settings. Webflow has no site-wide default, so you set them page by page. Here's where each change from your On-Page Mapping goes.

Every change below goes live only when you publish your site.

Before you begin

Adding SEO settings needs a paid Site plan, or a site in a Workspace with a paid Workspace plan. Any role except Reviewer can edit them.

Change a page's title and meta description

To change a static page:

  1. In the Designer, open the Pages panel.
  2. Hover over the page and click the Page settings icon.
  3. Under SEO settings, paste the new meta title into Title tag.
  4. Paste the new description into Meta description.
  5. Publish your site.

Webflow advises keeping the title under 60 characters. Descriptions have no limit, but search engines cut long ones short.

Change a Collection page

A Collection template page (blog posts, products, team members) sets one pattern for every item. Open the template's Page settings > SEO settings and click Add field to pull a Collection field into the title or description. To use your mapping's wording for each item, bind a text field in the Collection that holds it.

From Webflow: Add SEO title and meta description

Change the H1

The H1 is a Heading element on the canvas. To change its level:

  1. Select the heading on the canvas.
  2. Open the Settings panel (press D).
  3. Press the H1 heading type.

Webflow recommends one H1 per page that says what the page is for.

Change the URL

Change a static page's URL in the Slug field of its Page settings. Webflow page URLs use lowercase letters (a-z) and numbers (0-9). Tick Permanently redirect the old URL to this new one as you save, and Webflow adds a 301 redirect for you.

To add a redirect by hand, go to Site settings > Publishing > 301 redirects, enter the Old path and the Redirect to path, click Add redirect path, then publish.

From Webflow: Page URLs and Set up redirects

Add image alt text

To set alt text once for every place an image appears:

  1. Open the Assets panel (press J).
  2. Hover over the image and click the settings cog.
  3. Write a description in the Descriptive field.

To override it for one use of the image, select the image on the canvas, click the cog, and set the Alt text dropdown to Custom description.

From Webflow: Include alt text on images

To keep a page out of search results:

  1. Open the page's Page settings > SEO settings.
  2. Turn Sitemap indexing off.
  3. Publish your site.

The switch adds a noindex robots tag to the page. It only works when your site's auto-generated sitemap is on. CMS items have their own Sitemap Indexing switch under Item details, on paid Site plans.

From Webflow: Disable search engine indexing

Check it worked

Run the published page through the free Meta tag checker. It shows the title, description, H1 and robots tag the page serves now. Webflow's Audit panel, in the left toolbar, also lists pages still missing a title, description or alt text. When the change is live, tick Mark done on the page's row in On-Page Mapping.

Limits and usage

  • 301 redirects need a paid Site plan or a paid Workspace plan.
  • Utility pages, such as the 404 page, keep fixed slugs.
  • The Audit panel doesn't check alt text on images inside components, lightboxes or the CMS.
