What is a pillar page, and how does it link to the rest of your site?

A pillar page is a broad page that covers one main topic and links out to narrower pages, called cluster pages, that go deeper on each subtopic and link back to it.

Also calledPillar contentHub page

Illustration: one pillar and its cluster

  1. 1Pillar: How much does a kitchen renovation cost?
  2. 2Cluster: Kitchen cabinet costs by material
  3. 3Cluster: Benchtop materials compared
  4. 4Cluster: How long a kitchen renovation takes

Each cluster page links back to the pillar, and the pillar links to each of them.

Pillar pages and cluster pages

The pillar answers the broad search: what it is, the options, what it costs, how to choose. Each section summarises a subtopic and links to the cluster page that covers it in full. The cluster pages answer narrower searches and link back up, so the whole group reads as one subject to a searcher and to a crawler.

What makes a good pillar

A pillar earns its place by answering the broad search on its own:

  • It covers the head search completely, not as a list of links.
  • Every section links to the cluster page that goes deeper.
  • It is the page your other pages link to when they mention the topic.
  • It is updated when a cluster page changes what it says.

Mistakes to avoid

A pillar that is only a table of links gives a searcher nothing. A cluster page that targets the same broad search as the pillar competes with it. And a pillar with no cluster pages yet is just a long article; build the cluster as you go.

Pillar page: questions people ask

How long should a pillar page be?

As long as it takes to answer the broad search and summarise each subtopic. Length follows the topic, and many good pillars run 2,000 to 4,000 words.

Is a pillar page the same as a category page?

They can be. On a store, a well-written category page often does the pillar's job for its products.

Is a pillar page the same as a content hub?

Not quite. A content hub is the whole group: the pillar, its cluster pages and the links between them. The pillar is the page at the centre that the others link back to.
