SEO for small business: the basics that matter in your niche

What customers searched for in twelve kinds of small business we ran in August 2026, who showed up instead, and what the plan built first.

Every other niche we've run

Each section: what the niche's search results showed in our August 2026 benchmark, then what the plan does for a site like it.

Tuition centres

Parents search by level, subject and exam, so the pages that rank are built one level and one subject at a time. Three tuition centres ran through our August 2026 benchmark, and on the first, fuller business details at setup lifted the match with the SEO team's own rival list from 1 pick in 4 to 3 in 4. Your plan gives each level and subject its own page and marks the ones you still need to build.

LaterWriting articles for parents' questions is not open to customers yet. It opens in October.

Swim schools

Swim searches split by learner: adult beginners, toddlers and squads each get their own results, and a timetable page ranks for none of them. For both swim schools in our August 2026 benchmark, discovery returned real swim schools rather than directories, and found rivals the team had not listed. Your plan maps a page to each learner group and lists the schools you are really up against, for you to edit.

Sports academies

In a small sport the national association ranks for the sport's name, and an academy will not outrank its own governing body. The searches you can win name a programme, an age group or a place. The netball academy in our August 2026 benchmark first came back with no keywords at all, and a fix during that benchmark surfaced 14 real ones, so a thin niche gets a short, honest list. If the association shows up as a rival, you untick it before it shapes the plan.

Orthopaedic clinics

Hospital groups and medical encyclopaedias own condition searches, and a private clinic will not push them off. What a clinic can win is the procedure plus the place, the surgeon's name and the questions patients ask the week before they book. The orthopaedic clinic in our August 2026 benchmark saw hospital groups and overseas reference sites in its raw rival list, so you approve the list before it shapes the plan, and every search is marked by intent and difficulty.

Speech therapists

Speech therapy searches show hospitals, associations and parenting sites before private practices. The practice in our August 2026 benchmark had 7 pages, and its keyword list grew from 2 to 15 after a fix during that benchmark, which is what a small niche honestly holds. Your plan gives each concern parents search for its own page, and you remove a hospital or an association when one turns up as a rival.

Hair and scalp clinics

Hair loss searches mix clinics in your city with global brands selling pills and subscriptions. The clinics nearby are the rivals worth beating, because that is where your customers choose. The scalp clinic in our August 2026 benchmark drew 19 recommended keywords, and its raw rival list mixed local clinics with overseas brands, which is why you edit the list before it drives the plan. On-page fixes come as titles and descriptions to paste.

LaterWriting long treatment pages is not open to customers yet. It opens in October.

Employment agencies

Employers search for a role or a placement type, and a page about that exact placement tends to rank above an agency's homepage. Discovery for the employment agency in our August 2026 benchmark returned 7 rival agencies out of 10, and no directories, so positions there are won page against page. Your plan gives each placement type its own page and search.

Freight forwarders

Local forwarders with a page for each lane and service usually hold the results, not the global brands. In our August 2026 benchmark the SEO team listed 5 global freight brands as rivals, discovery found 10 local forwarders in the live results, and the two lists shared none. The same benchmark run produced 30 recommended keywords, the most of the fourteen sites, because lanes, modes and services each have their own search. The plan gives each lane and service its own page.

Career coaches

Government job agencies, resume writers and counsellors rank for coaching searches too, each answering a different question. The coaching site in our August 2026 benchmark drew 18 recommended keywords, and its rival list held real coaches beside a government agency and a resume service. Each search is marked learning, comparing or buying, so a career-change question and a search for a coach go to different pages.

Bakeries

Food directories and delivery apps take the first screen for most cake searches. For the bakery in our August 2026 benchmark, discovery returned five directories and delivery platforms before any rival bakery, and the site's firewall blocked our crawler outright. A bakery site wins the specific searches, a product with a niche or an occasion with a place, and the free local grid shows where you appear on the map around the shop.

What these pages will not do

No invented numbers: each one names the benchmark it came from. No client names and no case studies we can't show. Nothing is sold here that customers can't open today, and anything that opens later says when.
